May 7, 2025

A “go bag” (aka, an emergency kit) is essential for hurricane preparedness and allows you to quickly evacuate or shelter in place when needed.

This is a guide to preparing a hurricane-specific go bag in preparation for evacuations.

Essential Items for a Hurricane Go Bag

Water and food are your most important essentials, be sure to include:

  • One gallon of water per person per day (for at least 3 days)

  • Non-perishable food (3-day supply minimum)

  • A manual can opener

  • Baby formula, diapers, and pet supplies if needed

Maintaining communication and carrying lights are also vital:

  • Battery-powered or hand-crank radio

  • Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery big enough for several recharges

  • Flashlights with extra batteries

Medical and personal care needs that should also be in your bag:

  • First aid kit

  • Prescription medications (at least a 7-day supply)

  • Eyeglasses/contact lens supplies

  • Personal hygiene items (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, etc.)

  • Hand sanitizer or disinfecting wipes

Basic documents are also necessary:

  • Copies of important documents in a waterproof container:

    • ID/driver's license/passport

    • Family records (birth certificates, etc.)

  • Cash or traveler's checks

  • Credit cards

Clothing and bedding needs are important in any storm shelter:

  • Multiple changes of clothing for each person including extra underwear and socks

  • Sturdy shoes and gloves

  • Rain gear

  • Pillows and blankets or sleeping bags

Tools and various safety items may also come in handy:

  • A multi-purpose tool and duct tape

  • Dust masks

  • Plastic tarps and garbage bags

Consider also special considerations if these apply to you:

  • Medications and food for pets

  • Activities for children

  • Items for elderly or disabled family members

Tips for Maintaining Your Go Bag

It’s a good idea to always have a Go Bag ready during hurricane season, but be sure to review what’s in your bag at least annually. Some additional tips include:

  • Store in sturdy, easy-to-carry containers (backpacks or duffle bags)

  • Keep in an accessible location (near your front door)

  • Check expiration dates and replace items regularly (especially food, water, medications)

  • Consider seasonal needs (extra warm clothes in winter)

  • Store items in waterproof plastic totes either in or near your vehicle

Preparing for the worst well in advance of any impending hurricane can go a long way to making evacuations faster, easier, and safer for your entire family.
